Outstanding Outdoor Event (results of MoMo #13)

On Monday March 1, 2010 we conducted the first outdoor Mobile Monday Switzerland event on the Polyterrasse in Zurich.

We took a chance when we scheduled this two-hour Hands-On Mobile Augmented Reality event for the first day of March. It could have been raining, snowing or windy. The day before, on February 28, when we were doing our rehearsals on the Polyterrasse, it was cold and very windy. But, for the final event on the afternoon of March 1, the weather was a mild and not too bright.

There were over 100 people in attendance and 10 people were available, wearing gold sashes, to demonstrate the latest Augmented Reality applications on mobile devices. Sometimes it was difficult to see much on the small mobile device screen, but people were patient and waited their turns to see the demos.

Thank you to Gbanga’s Matthias Sala for organizing the field trips as well as showing many mobile AR game applications, to Sibylle Peuker and Martin Feuz for showing the overview of three or four popular applications and browsers (including Layar, Wikitude, Junaio and AcrossAir), to Gilad Geron for showing five different outdoor/geo-tourism type of applications on iPhone and Android, to Till Quack, Marc Steffen and Herbert Bay for showing the kooaba visual search (Interactive Print) and the Google Goggles applications and to our out-of-town guests, Peter Meier (CTO of metaio) and Martin Lechner (CTO of Mobilizy) who stayed after the Augmented Reality DevCamp Zurich.

We are glad that Peter and Martin were available during Mobile Monday Switzerland for our members to ask questions and see the demos first hand from the architects of two of the leading platforms for Mobile Social Augmented Reality.

After about an hour and a half of demos, it was beginning to get cold outside. We all moved to the bQm.li just below the Polyterrasse and enjoyed networking in the casual college bistro atmosphere.

Thank you to all who attended and contributed to this great event!

Summary: Making money on mobile

The new format we were investigating last night at MoMo #7, “making money on mobile” was quite appealing to the audience. Please find the few slides of the panelists here.

The debate was so intense that we could not finish all provocative statements that were prepared. However, you are welcome to discuss them in the comments in this blog post.

Read more about this event on the programme page.

#7: Making money on mobile (May 2009)

mobile_money

Come in, one and all!The arena is open for an active controversy on how to make money with cell phones and/or mobile services.
So far, only few proven business models exist for mobile software and mobile services. However, we want to investigate models including app stores, advertising, download/entrance fees (premium SMS), recurring payments (monthly subscriptions), micro-payment, walled-garden revenue sharing and combinations with other non-mobile services and products.

Interesting showcases from economics, politics and entertainment/sports are presented.

We do have first-class speakers from different industry sectors with very different ideas about making money on mobile.

Format: Firstly, the speakers pitch shortly their field of expertise. Secondly, the speakers discuss some provocative theses provided by the moderator. Seamlessly, the audience takes part in the debate. Drinks and snacks are kindly provided by our location sponsor Swisscom.

Details: Please visit the programme page for further information about this meeting.

#6: Smart camera applications (April 2009)

Phones are not just for voice. Cameras are not just for taking photos

There’s much more to the camera in a mobile phone than only a device for taking photos. The value of the camera phone above and beyond a digital camera is the result of integration of the camera with other mobile handset hardware and software , and services. In this meeting we will be describing and discussing the technologies and applications for these, native and which may be added to the camera phone by the user, that enrich images, extract information from the user’s environment and add to the utility and fun of mobile platforms. Also learn how companies are making money from smart camera applications.

Format for this meeting: Presentations by experts will be followed by interactive demonstrations during our casual, informal networking and refreshments.

Demonstrations: During our networking time, we will have live smart camera application demonstrations and information from the following institutions:

Nokia, Technical University of Graz/Imagination (Vienna), Originize, Kaywa, Kooaba, BeeTagg and others.

For more details, please visit the programme page for this meeting.
